This diablito mask with intricately painted details in vivid primary colours (on carved balsa wood) is the work of renowned Brunka artist, Esteban Morales L. (Boruca village).
This is a dynamic study in the traditional Brunka tribal style – this mask’s design-work also features symbols found on their ancestral petroglyphs – rock art that is scattered throughout this tribe’s territory, animal skins and ‘shamanic energy lines’. Complex in its execution and painted detail, a more impressive mask would be hard to find.
