Toothy and Horny Mask

Carved from balsa wood, this wood mask’s complex design corresponds to the traditional diablo mask-type used by the Brunka to represent themselves in their centuries-old Danza de los Diablitos. The antagonist, the toro (bull), represents the invading Spanish.

Edixon Mora L. (native of Boruca village) this mask’s carver, achieves a complex design in the carving and the multi-layered painted surface was done by another Brunka artist of renown, Ronny Fernandez.. This “toothy and horny” diablo mask is certainly a stunning addition to an ethnographic/traditional mask collection or as wall art decor.
