“Upturned Chin” Traditional Mask

Carved by one of the more talented mask making families of Boruca village, this elementary, yet richly detailed, ceremonial mask displays a distinct design that harkens back to an earlier period in this centuries-old Native tradition: the upturned chin. These hand-carved wood diablito masks are worn by Brunka ceremonial participants to represent their people in their centuries-old Danza de los Diablitos. In the venerable tribal cultural event, the antagonist, the toro (bull), represents the invading Spanish.
