‘Descending Macaw’ Ceremonial Mask

A Boruca village style diablo mask, worn by participants every year in the indigenous Brunka ceremony, or, danza in Spanish. Some diablito mask types are local fauna themes (such as this ‘descending scarlet macaw’ theme) – this is a totem bird belonging to the face mask itself: an ancestral personage with gold accoutrements.

This mask, carved from balsa wood, offers unique wall art decor. It was used in Boruca village in the Danza de los Diablitos of 2020 – 2021.
