Description
Jade-encrusted Chieftain, Boruca
The Brunka tribal diablito mask is essentially a homage to their ancestors – the mask visage represents an ancestral chieftain in local balsa wood (and painted). Note the allusion to the regalia of the native nobility: goldwork, jadework and macaw feathers.
This collectible ethnographic mask is a ‘diablo‘ mask-type which has been used in the Brunka tribe’s annual celebration for centuries (in both of their villages: Boruca and Rey Curré).
This mask was worn in the Danza de los Diablitos of 2020-2021 in their principal village of Boruca, in southern Costa Rica. This piece comes accompanied with valuable photo-documentation.
