Description

‘Ferocious’, Boruca village

The Brunka tribal diablito mask is essentially a homage to their ancestors – the mask visage represents a ferocious warrior (demon visage) whose jaguar nagual is bursting through. Carved in local balsa wood (and painted).

This collectible ethnographic mask is a ‘diablo‘ mask-type which has been used in the Brunka tribe’s annual celebration for centuries (in both of their villages: Boruca and Rey Curré).

This mask was worn in the Danza de los Diablitos of 2020-2021 in their principal village of Boruca, in southern Costa Rica. This piece comes accompanied with valuable photo-documentation.
