Googly Eyes

Carved from balsa wood and painted, this complex diablito mask represents the ancestors of the Brunka people – defenders of their territory in the face of the invasion and settlement of their region by the Europeans . This googly eyes mask design incorporates regions that allude to jaguar pelts, reptiles and ancient motifs found on petroglyphs that are scattered through Brunka territory. This mask was worn in the Danza de los Diablitos of 2019-2020 in the village of Boruca.
