‘Feathered ancestor’ Mask 2019-2020 – Rey Curre

This spectacular ceremonial Brunka mask was worn by a participant in the tribe’s annual ceremonial, Danza de los Diablitos of 2019-2020 in the second Brunka tribal village of Rey Curre (carved and painted by a mask maker from this village).

This powerful mask, carved in balsa wood and painted, is a composition honouring an ancestor – as a defender of Brunka lifeways and their ancestral lands. This feathered ancestor mask includes in its design an array of tropical bird feathers, toucanets and a keel-billed toucan, and designs found on the rock petroglyphs of territory.

Once this mask is strapped over the head of the jugador (masked participant), the transformation is complete and makes for a stunning and rather threatening effect.
