Large Feline Spirit
Hand carved and painted balsa wood, this tribal mask was worn in the Danza/Juego de los Diablitos of 2019-2020 in the village of Rey Curre, Costa Rica.
This mask – representing a anthropomorphized jaguar-as-chieftain as seen through ‘night vision’ (black and white tones). This personage actually represents the indigenous population before the invading Spanish – quite simply, it symbolizes the native Brunka themselves.
