Large Feline Spirit

Hand carved and painted balsa wood, this tribal mask was worn in the Danza/Juego de los Diablitos of 2019-2020 in the village of Rey Curre, Costa Rica.

This mask represents an anthropomorphized jaguar-as-chieftain – seen through ‘night vision’ (black and white tones) – is how the mask maker humourously described his creation to us! This personage actually represents the indigenous population before the invading Spanish – quite simply, it symbolizes the native Brunka themselves.

  • Tribe: Brunka (Boruca)
  • Size: 8 1/2″ x 19″ (22 x 48.25 cm)
  • Artist: G. F Rojas
