Description

Berzerk

The mask represents the Brunka themselves in the personage of a diablito (Spanish for little devil, although truly, these diablitos represent their ancestral warriors – defenders of Brunka territory).  This traditional mask is conceived as a ‘little devil’/warrior gone “berzerk“. It was ‘played’, or worn, during the three days of the violent and pitched battle between the many diablitos and the xamán (bull, who represents the foreign invader and colonist) – in the Danza de los Diablitos of  2019-2020 in the village of Boruca, Costa Rica.

Carved and painted balsa wood.

  • Tribe: Brunka (Boruca)
  • Size: 12″ x 19” (30.5 x 48.25cm)
  • Artist: Gonzalez-Rojas family
