Description
Horny and Fangy
Carved from balsa wood, painted and worn during the three days of this year’s annual ceremony – this powerful horny and fangy ancestor mask truly transforms the wearer. Featuring a traditional diablo mask with a frenzied expression, the diablito personage actually represents a Brunka ancestor in full battle rage.
The diablito actually represents the ‘pagan’ Native – a burlesque, on one level, of how the invading Europeans saw the indigenous people in the 16th and 17th centuries.
Galería Namu acquired this mask after the 2019-2020 ceremony concluded in the village of Boruca, Costa Rica. Ideal for collectors as unique carved wood traditional art.
- Tribe: Brunka (Boruca)
