Butterfly Defender
Hand carved and painted balsa wood, this tribal mask was worn in the Danza/Juego de los Diablitos of 2022-2023 in the village of Rey Curre, Costa Rica.
This mask represents a traditional notion that understands that all animals have a ‘steward’, or as they say an owner/protector/chief. This mask talks to that belief – this represented entity is a butterfly defender Ultimately, this personage actually represents the indigenous population before the invading Spanish – quite simply, it symbolizes the native Brunka themselves.
