Balsa Jaguar: Ceremonial Mask
This ceremonial Brunka mask features a natural balsa wood, stylized jaguar. A Brunka diablito mask design, as the name suggests, typically features a demon, however in the last few decades, some such diablo masks also depict either animals, especially predatory ones such as this powerful, local feline, or human faces of ancestors (chieftains and shamans).
These masks are made specially for use in the Brunka’s annual tribal ceremony and thus not designed for the tourist trade.
This mask was worn in the Danza de los Diablitos of 2018-2019 in the village of Boruca, southern Costa Rica.
