Spirit Between Wings

Carved from balsa wood and painted, this rich mask composition reveals a complex cosmology belonging to the small, but important Brunka tribe of the southern Pacific coast watershed of Costa Rica. This mask was worn in Rey Curre village during this three day tribal ceremony. The creativity of these Brunka tribal artists never cease to amaze. In this visually and symbolically packed composition is featured an ancestral human visage – an ancestral diablito – a spirit within the wings of a flying scarlet macaw at the same time depicted as a headdress.

This is an evocative mask and the original head straps are still attached. Ceremonial mask worn in the Danza de los Diablitos of 2022-2023. Important context image of the mask being used accompany this piece.
