‘Owl Energy’ Mask
As the masked diablito jugadores (‘demon’ dancers or players) have always symbolized the Brunka people themselves in this venerable tribal ceremony, this mask is a typical design. Besides demon faces in the masks such are also carved with human ancestral visages, or local fauna (as in this mask). The chosen nagual/alter-ego for this diablito is an owl – owl energy – the nocturnal hunter par exellence.
This spectacular mask, once put on by the wearer, really transforms the jugador (masked ‘player”) into a mythical entity. This”Owl Energy” tribal mask, was worn as part of the Danza de los Diablitos of 2017-2018 in the village of Boruca. Valuable photo documentation of this mask being worn in the danza is available.
