“Deer-Owl” Rey Curré Mask
Carved from local balsa wood and adorned with local seeds, this used Rey Curré village ceremonial mask – a strange mythic “deer-owl” – would be of interest to serious ethnographic mask collectors. It’s attractive rustic authenticity typifies the very “non-tourist-y”, non-commercial aspect of the mask making tradition among the Brunka that indeed enjoys wide appeal with collectors and visitors to Costa Rica.
This mask was worn during the 3 days of the traditional tribal event, the Danza de los Diablitos in Rey Curré village, and has suffered scuffs and bashes (some missing seeds) from multiple battles against the European forces and culture that came to their territory some 400 years ago, represented by the bull (xaman in the Brunka language).
