Description
Seashell Encrusted Mask
This seashell-encrusted ghost chief mask, ultimately representing an ancestor, is a valuable ethnographic piece for its cultural import. This mask was used throughout the 3 days of the venerable Danza de los Diablitos in Costa Rica’s indigenous Rey Curre village, 2019-2020. The expressive carving and surface treatment is remarkable and nearly disturbing – a fine example of this tribe’s creative mask making tradition.
Valuable photo-documentation of this historic mask being worn in the ceremony accompanies this piece with purchase.
