Description

Sky and Earth Powers

This is an imposing cultural mask of the Brunka tribe worn in their annual ceremonial event:  Danza de los Diablitos (in the village of Boruca 2019-2020). Representing a Brunka ancestor, with his mythically significant animal totems: toucans and ocelot, this powerful piece represents the defending autochtonous population against the invading European/colonial forces. Notions of totem and spirit animals, as well as ‘shape shifting’, very clearly featured in this piece, are still extant in the beliefs of the Brunka and many other indigenous groups on the isthmus.

Carved from local balsa wood and painted, this used, or ‘played’, diablito mask was worn during the full duration of this 3 day ceremony, still featuring the head straps. Valuable context image accompanies this piece.
