Description
‘Rough-hewn’ Man, older Brunka tribal mask
This is an impacful cultural mask of the Brunka tribe, created with a minimum of carving moves and worn in their annual ceremonial event: Danza de los Diablitos (in the village of Boruca 2008-2010). Representing a Brunka ancestor, this basic, but powerful piece represents the defending autochtonous population against the invading European/colonial forces.
Carved from local balsa wood, this diablito mask was worn during the full duration of this 3 day ceremony over two years – still featuring original head straps. Valuable context image accompanies this piece.
