Spirit of Hummingbird, Costa Rica
This remarkable and compelling ceremonial ‘spirit of hummingbird’ mask (hand carved and painted balsa wood) was used in the village of Rey Curre during the Danza de los Diablitos of 2019-2020. The hummingbird is a particularly important bird in Brunka cosmology and legend. These smallest of birds on our planet are argueably the most ferocious and territorial.
This mask, known as a diablito mask in Spanish, represents the indigenous population – specifically the Brunka and their warriors who resisted the invasion and subsequent European colonization. The mask itself is a composite of two main elements: a hummingbird nagual (alter-ego), and a diablito visage – an ancestor.
