Description

Collectible, older classic traditional mask, Boruca village

This older, used ethnographic mask – a design depicting an ancestor of the Brunka tribe with an expression as if the personage were in trance. This mask was worn during the 2002-2003 tribal ceremonial event – Danza de los Diablitos – in the village of Boruca, Costa Rica. The Danza de los Diablitos is annually celebrated in the two principal Brunka tribal communities of Boruca and Rey Curré villages in the south Pacific coast watershed of Costa Rica.

Unique wall art that cannot be ignored, this evocative historic piece, carved from balsa wood and adorned with human hair, actually represents, in the coreography of the danza, the Brunka people themselves. Once strapped over the jugador‘s face a true transformation indeed emerges through this personage making for an impressive presence. Photo-documentation of this piece being worn in the annual danza accompanies this mask.
