‘War Cry’: Ceremonial Mask
This ceremonial Brunka mask – carved and painted balsa wood adorned with a feather headdress, is a classic kagbru rojk (diablito, or little devil, in the Brunka language). This powerful piece – worn during the three days of this venerable tribal event – appears to be giving a war cry.
These masks are made specifically for use in the Brunka’s annual tribal ceremony and thus not designed for the tourist trade.
This mask was worn in the Danza de los Diablitos of 2019-2020 in the village of Boruca, southern Costa Rica.
