Handsome Heliconias

These finely woven baskets, handmade from split chunga palm leaf and natural dyes by the indigenous Wounaan tribe features design themes derived from the flora and fauna of the Wounaan’s territory in the Darien region of Panama.

This tapestry-like, tightly woven ‘combed-stitch’ basket design displays an array of handsome heliconia flowers, stylized and repeated across the surface of the black background basket. The surprise element of this woven design is the ‘mandala’ termination gracing the basket’s underside.
