Hummingbirds and Orchids

This unique basket design possesses a lovely, tapering silouette with a complex design featuring hummingbirds and orchids. The weaving technique is called ‘roll stitch’, as the corrugated, coiled inner structure shows. An interesting feature in this piece is the unique indented “navel” on the underside around which the whole composition revolves.

Exquisite decorative baskets such as these are handmade from split chunga palm leaf and natural dyes by indigenous (mostly women) weavers, featuring design themes derived from the flora and fauna of the Wounaan’s territory in the Darien region of Panama.
