Flora and Fauna Basket 006

Tropical Butterfly Pageantry

In this handsome composition – a tropical butterfly pageantry – different tropical butterfly species “flutter” about the middle of this lovely-shaped basket.

Hand woven from split chunga palm leaf and natural dyes by the indigenous Wounaan of Panama.  Such design themes are drawn from the flora and fauna of the Wounaan’s territory in the Darien region of Panama. This particular basket’s stitch technique is called the ‘combed stitch’ whereby the inner coiled structure is covered with a “combed” over stitch creating the outer “skin” on which the design is seen.
