Description

Mamalian

Made from split chunga palm leaf, coloured with natural dyes, these wall masks are created by the Emberá basket weavers (a related, but distinct tribe from Panama’s Wounaan indian tribe).

These masks were inspired by the jaibaná‘s (medicine people, or shaman) carved balsa wood masks which hung around the interior of a dwelling where healing rituals took place. Some masks are representations of fantastic beings, whereas others are recognizable animals.

This particular mask features a type of mamalian – of that there is no doubt!
