Fantastical Tropical Bird

These split chunga palm leaf and natural dyed masks are created by the Emberá (a related, but distinct tribe from the Wounaan tribe of Panama) basket weavers as collectible wall art.

Originally, these masks were woven inspired by the jaibaná (medicine people, or shamans) carved masks which hung around the interior of a dwelling where rituals take place. Often the Emberá masks are representations of fantastic beings, whereas others are recognizable fauna. This particular wall art piece features a rather fantastical tropical bird.
