Ancient Ancestor Mask, Costa Rica

This Brunka mask features a mystical view of an ancient ancestor represented by the diablito ceremonial mask and the chieftain spirit in the upper half of the composition, surrounded by forest and the local, magnificent scarlet macaw and toucan birds. This piece clearly shows the close affinity that Brunka culture, like all aboriginal cultures, traditionally have with their natural surroundings  – that the connection is seamless.

These masks are  brought before an unexpecting public by the immensely talented mask makers of the Brunka tribe of Costa Rica. Makes for striking wall art.

The design of these art masks, hand carved and painted from balsa wood, by artists from the Brunka tribe in Costa Rica correspond to the traditional diablo mask-type used by the Brunka in their annual Danza de los Diablitos and are typically fused with local flora-fauna and sometimes traditional cultural elements and motifs.
