In this richly illustrative butterfly nagual ‘eco-mask’, there is featured a serene face – a forest ‘spirit entity’. The centre-piece forest visage could be interpreted as the butterfly’s “owner” (a common belief among aboriginal groups of lower Central America), or ‘alter-ego’.
In this composition, Melvin ‘Kamel’ González R., famous Brunka mask maker, tribal ceremonial participant and esteemed artist, has created a striking study of this venerated insect from his territory. It is cleverly melded with the visage of a Brunka ancestor.
