Hand carved and painted balsa wood, this tribal mask was worn in the Danza/Juego de los Diablitos of 2016-2017 in the village of Boruca, Costa Rica.
This mask – representing the indigenous population before the invading Spanish – is a powerful and solemn mask (symbolizing the native Brunka themsleves), the design features an ancestral cacique (tribal chief) sporting a gold headband with assorted feathers assembled along the top – including motmot bird and heron feathers.
