Orchid Protector

This particular mask-inspired, carved rainforest piece features an ancestral spectral visage – the orchid protector – peering out from among a serene forest canopy scene featuring a large orchid, butterflies, a hummingbird, and trogon birds. The carved balsa wood a canvas used by this famed mask maker to depict his natural surroundings at home in Boruca. The solemn visage represents the ever-present ancestral spirit keeping vigilant in the composition

These elaborate and almost narrative ecological and cultural masks  represent an artistic evolution emerging from the traditional Brunka ceremonial masks. Using the same wood species (balsa wood and tropical cedar), these smaller versions are very popular for their size and price tag.
