Classic Black and White Basket
This is a classic black and white “cultural” geometric composition with an extraordinarily intricate ‘hounds tooth” pattern in which the artist has masterfully woven white ‘points’ over a black background – a flawless repetition of minute geometric shapes. The spectacular resulting pattern, the thin walls, plus this basket’s handsome silouette denotes weaving of the highest caliber by this highly accomplished Native artist of the Majé community, in the Darién region of Panama, Magaly Mejía.
These decorative baskets handwoven by Panama’s indigenous tribe, the Wounaan, are made from split chunga palm leaf and natural dyes and feature geometric designs and other abstract design elements.
