Hummingbird Study ‘Eco-mask’, Costa Rica

This Brunka ecological mask – a hummingbird study – features an extraordinarily realistic rendering of a perched hummingbird above his nagual , or this tiny bird’s ‘spirit owner’, or steward (as understood in the traditional cosmologies of the Native tribes of lower Central America among which figure the Brunka tribe, Boruca and Rey Curre villages, Costa Rica).

These masks are brought before a usually unexpecting public surprised by these creations of the immensely talented mask makers of the Brunka tribe of Costa Rica. Makes for striking wall art.

The design of these art masks, hand carved and painted from balsa wood, by artists from the Brunka tribe in Costa Rica correspond to the traditional diablo mask-type used by the Brunka in their annual Danza de los Diablitos and are typically fused with local flora-fauna and sometimes traditional cultural elements and motifs.

  • Tribe: Brunka (Boruca)
  • Size: 11″ x 26″ (28 cm x 66″)
  • Artist: Bernardo Gonzalez M.
