Description
Effigy Ocarina (pre-European musical instrument)
This unique bat bottle is a version of several bat-themed vessels and effigies from this earlier period excavated within the Gran Nicoya cultural region. Earlier pottery styles from this early period are known less for the famed complex ‘polychrome’ pottery from this same region from a later period. The elegance of these earlier pieces is to be found in the minute engraved surface designs and remarkable plastic forms representing fauna, humans and a mixture of the two.
This piece is elegant testimony of a people – from the Gran Nicoya archeological culture – who had a true appreciation of high aesthetics, knowledge of local fauna and design finesse.
